When we read a post about '37 reasons why you shouldn't come to Serbia' along with breathtaking pictures our minds blew away. Wow! Is it really Serbia? Is it there so beautifully? We realized that we didn't know about this country too much. And then we got an impulse. We've just decided that we need to visit Serbia to find out if it will impress us as well. During 14 days we have moved to a different world. The world where primary role was played by the people we met at every step while we were working on our video footage. They gave us a something really precious, deficient product of present - a dose of sincere, genuine emotions. They opened their warm hearts without expecting anything in return. Storytraveler Mark Hofmeyr travelled with Melvin (@traveldudes), Kash (@budgettraveller), Rob (@bloggeries) and Becki (@bordersofadv) travelled to Serbia: a Lonely Planet top 10 country to visit in 2015 #MySerbia brought to you by iambassador and Serbia Tourism http://my.serbia.travel/ Travel to Serbia – See It With New Eyes THE SECRET DESTINATION THAT IS SERBIA Nestled and land-locked between Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria, it’s as though these surrounding countries have outshone the jewels of this land, keeping Serbia hidden from the rest of the world. As travelling filmmakers we’re always on the lookout for undiscovered destinations and travel stories which are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to find, so our recent trip to Serbia sparked great excitement as it was just the type of place we had been looking for – Truly unique, authentic and incredibly beautiful! We know it’s not the top destination on your list, but we’re going to paint you a picture of what we discovered, through our videography, photography and words, that will undoubtedly change your mind and rearrange that list of yours. If you’re wondering if Serbia is for you, here’s the type of person who would absolutely love it: #1 – FOR THOSE WHO LOVE WILD PLACES If for no other reason, come to Serbia for its wild and untouched nature. The landscapes look like watercolour paintings, with pastel shades and hues touching everything the eye can see, from the ground beneath your feet to the very tops of the sky. You can’t help but be immersed in the mystical beauty of it all. #2 – FOR THOSE WHO ARE FOODIES Serbia is the best kept foodie secret, where cultures collide! Eating in Serbia is equivalent to a culinary feast in Turkey, Hungary and the Mediterranean all wrapped into one. With every dish being hearty, creamy and fatty, you’ll not only have a piece of Serbia close to your heart by the end of it, but a great portion on your hips too. But the good news is that it’s 110% worth it and we can guarantee that your taste-buds will love it so much, that they’ll long for these unique flavours for years to come. #3 – FOR THOSE WHO LOVE TO PARTY Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, which boasts some of Europe’s most exuberant nightlife, reflects its golden city lights into the Danube river which hugs its shores - This city has an energy and vibrancy that’s contagious and addictive! During the day we would explore its Bohemian neighbourhoods, covered in colourful wild flowers and dotted with street cafes and at night, every night, we would party! Many say Belgrade is the next Ibiza, with super clubs called “splavs”, on barges that float alongside the river’s edge, filled with gorgeous, young people having the time of their lives on hot summer nights! #4 – FOR THOSE WHO ARE HISTORIANS AND CULTURALISTS AT HEART Belgrade’s beauty stems from it’s astounding architecture and gritty look and feel, adding a very special charm to the city, as it displays evidence of its rich history from generations before us. Pristine museums, castles and churches are any historians dream, telling tales of many wars and cultural shifts. But if you’re not a fan of buildings, every Serbian is like a little history book. They are so passionate about their country that if you show interest and give them half the chance, they’ll tell you all about their country’s entire story, inviting you into their world for an insiders’ look at their cultures and traditions. Serbia’s turbulent past has caused the tourism industry to bypass it, indirectly creating a country so raw and authentic that it inspired us beyond words, leaving us feeling in awe of all we had encountered during our time here. But unfortunately, like all things in life, this will not last forever and we urge you to see it with your own eyes, before the tour groups get their hands on it. So do yourself a favour and go somewhere unexpected on your next trip, like Serbia – You’ll be surprised by what you find! by Roxanne Boyes Filmed and edited by Mark Hofmeyr on behalf of http://storytravelers.com connect on facebook http://facebook.com/storytravelers Writing: Becki Enright Voice: Don McCorkindale Read more http://www.bordersofadventure.com/travel-to-serbia-balkans-post-conflict-resurgence/ - http://www.bordersofadventure.com/nature-in-serbia-a-land-undiscovered/ - http://www.bordersofadventure.com/why-im-travelling-to-serbia-continuing-my-balkans-exploration/ - http://www.bordersofadventure.com/defiant-belgrade-the-heart-of-a-new-serbia/ - http://budgettraveller.org/40-pictures-that-will-make-you-want-to-visit-serbia/ - http://budgettraveller.org/this-is-my-serbia/ - http://budgettraveller.org/zdravo-i-am-off-to-serbia/ - http://stophavingaboringlife.com/its-time-to-explore-serbia-myserbia/ - http://stophavingaboringlife.com/taste-of-nightlife-in-belgrade-serbia/ - http://stophavingaboringlife.com/getting-to-know-serbia/ - http://www.traveldudes.org/guidebook/europe-serbia/4273

I think Serbia is one of those countries where you as a wealthy expat should be looking at for more freedom for a plan B, especially if you are from the European Union, because Serbia is obviously right next to the European Union, but not part of the EU, and it's probably not going to be part in the next decade. The Serbian passport also gives you access to both east and west of the world, having access to the Schengen Area, while also having access to Russia and China and good countries in Latin America, as well as some countries in Asia. Overall, a very underrated country. People think it's this very poor communist place, but it's actually a very capitalistic place. You have low taxes, you have ways of reducing your tax rate significantly. You have great people, great English-speaking, some of the best people that you can hire. My team is full of Serbians. The first person that you talk to, Jovana, she's Serbian. So definitely somewhere where we benefited in hiring people has been Serbia, Belgrade specifically. If you want to invest in Serbia, we have many different events coming up like the Expo Serbia in 2027. Many different events coming to Belgrade specifically, and a lot of foreign investment. A lot of US citizens, a lot of Americans, Canadians, Europeans, are investing in Serbia, specifically in areas like Belgrade Waterfront where a lot of Arabs are investing, and overall it's growing the economy, the country, and specifically the capital. The passport, I see it getting better and better with time. Serbia keeps a balance between their neighbors and other regions of the world, and also their regional disputes, because when the United States told the president to push troops away from Kosovo, he pushed them away from Kosovo just to appease the United States, to appease Europe, to appease the west, because he knows he has to keep that balance. And that's overall the Serbian culture. Balance, tradition. You'll find some of the best women you'll ever see, extremely beautiful women, and they want a traditional life. People buy land, they build a family. They have that culture of building a big family that we're losing in the West. Yes, there is a certain European aspect to Serbia, but it still maintains its traditional values. And not just Belgrade, but Serbia in general is one of the best investment opportunities in the world. For example, this home that we stayed in the countryside, you can buy a home like this for around 50 to €60,000 euros, and then you could rent it out on Airbnb or on the local websites for around €300 per night. Essentially, you're making eight to €9,000 per month on a property that costs you €60,000 to build, including the land and everything that you have to put into the property. You have countryside that is absolutely stunning, beautiful. You don't have the beach, but you also have Montenegro, which has amazing relationships with Serbia. You can enter Montenegro with a Serbian ID. They don't really care how much time you go and spend in Montenegro. You're probably not going to become a Montenegran citizen, but you can spend as much time as you want in the beautiful beach towns of Montenegro. Overall, one of those countries that people don't look at, that people don't think about on their portfolio. They always look at the headline programs, the golden visas, the citizenship by investment. But in my personal experience, I personally, my company, my team overall, my life in general has benefited from Serbia immensely. Adding to all of that, obviously Serbia is still a developing economy, a developing country. So for example, when you order a taxi, don't expect a Lexus or Mercedes like you would get in Dubai. Expect a very old Toyota or a car that's almost breaking down. That's unfortunate in Serbia, but it is improving. It is getting better. It's getting a lot of investments, and it's growing the economy over time. So in five to 10 years, I'm not surprised if we see Serbia as one of the top places to live in the world, top places to invest, they roll out a golden visa, they roll out some permanent residency program or something to attract even more wealthy investors. Because now they're trying to attract people, they're trying to attract investors, but on the down low. DISCLAIMER: This video is not tax and/or financial advice. Any information or advice I give is purely based on my own experience and research.
